4.2.1 SOCIAL CAPITAL AND THE DIGITAL DIVIDE:

Social capital is “the collective value of all social networks (who people know) and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do things for each other (norms of reciprocity). The central premise of social capital is that social networks have value”.

The use of digital technologies to enhance traditional public participation processes and to build a new form of a social capital and digital social capital is being embraced in a range of planning practices. Users who engage and collaborate with in social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, we are in fact building social capital. Social capital is about specific benefits that are achieved from the use of social networks, such as reciprocity, trust, co-operation and information. Essentially it creates value for people who are connected to each other. You are increasing your social and communication skills. Furthermore, you are growing your general digital literacy, whilst increasing your psychological wellbeing, as you feel connected and respected through engagement with others. The online collaboration you gain is obvious that the digital divide would impact peoples ability to leverage their social capital, impending their ability to access information, data and knowledge that may enhance their own feelings of self-worth coupled with their ability to further themselves socially, economically and professionally. There are many ways to enhance and build your social capital such as, join gout and meeting people, the more connections you have the better access to resources you have.  You both can evaluate what you need from each other and how you can relate. Simply talking to a person about your life style, work or passions is very effective. Being active on social media plays an important role too. They're many websites like Linkedin, where you can connect with people and learn from them or organize to work together. Get involved in social media groups. Social media groups gives you access to people who think the similarly to you and is a place where you can share your vision and ideas. Its important to display as much information about your self to other people, so they can really understand who are and figure out how you could build a connection together, because as I said before social capital is a connection.
